KAUTO STAR & RUBY WALSH

Kauto Star is widely considered one of the greatest National Hunt steeplechasers in the history of horse racing. Trained by Paul Nicholls and primarily ridden by jockey Ruby Walsh, the French-bred gelding dominated the staying chase division during the late 2000s and early 2010s. Known for his versatility, cruising speed, and remarkable longevity, he became a household name and a fan favorite across the racing world.  

Kauto Star amassed 16 Grade 1 victories and earned over £3.7 million in prize money (including a £1 million bonus for winning the Stayers' Chase Triple Crown in the 2006/2007 season). His career is defined by unmatched records in the sport's most prestigious races:

King George VI Chase (5 Wins): He holds the all-time record for victories in Kempton's Boxing Day showpiece, winning it in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2011. His 2009 victory was a devastating 36-length demolition of the field.

Cheltenham Gold Cup (2 Wins): He won National Hunt racing's most prestigious prize in 2007 and 2009. Crucially, he is the only horse in history to regain the Gold Cup after losing it (he was defeated in 2008).

Betfair Chase (4 Wins): He dominated Haydock's premier race, winning it four times (2006, 2007, 2009, and 2011).

Tingle Creek Chase (2 Wins): Proving his incredible versatility, he won this elite two-mile speed test in 2005 and 2006 before stepping up to the grueling three-and-a-quarter-mile Gold Cup distance. 

Kauto Star's legacy is forever intertwined with his stablemate, Denman. The two horses were polar opposites in style—Kauto Star was the slick, speedy traveler, while Denman (nicknamed "The Tank") was a relentless, front-running powerhouse. Their clashes in the Cheltenham Gold Cup captivated the public. Denman decisively beat Kauto Star to take the Gold Cup in 2008, setting the stage for 2009, where Kauto Star exacted his revenge, jumping flawlessly to win by 13 lengths and cementing his legendary status.
